“Life is way too short to spend another day at war with yourself”
I know ladies, we have all been there. We have all stood in front of the mirror and not liked what we see. We could be feeling ourselves one day and the other absolutely hating the way our body looks..
Just because, we don’t match the standards of beauty set by the society, but I ask you, who exactly matches these impossible standards and more importantly who sets these standards?
I know the latter is a tough one to answer, but let me answer it for you. You set these standards, for yourself if not for others! You decide what is beautiful for yourself and what is not, no one else does!
It starts with accepting how your body is, your shape and your size, your color or your so called “imperfections”, It’s knowing your body will go through changes with nature, age or because of your own personal choices and it’s loving those changes.
Body dissatisfaction took a peak in 1990’s but since 2010 there has been a rise in body positive campaigns and thanks to social media platforms models like Leah Kelly and Bo Stanley have inspired many other girls to feel confident in their own skin!
Well, I am no instagram model but I do know a tip or two that would help you on your journey to self-love and satisfaction.
Here are five things you can do daily to liberate yourself from self-hate.
1. Talk to yourself
We all love to talk to ourselves so why not just be our own motivational coach? Pump yourself up, tell yourself how good you look. Flaunt your dress in front of the mirror, take pictures and write empowering captions underneath them. Do your makeup or go bare-face, whatever floats your boat, just keep hyping yourself throughout the day! Trust me, you need this.
Everyday write three things you are thankful about in yourself, it could be anything like the way your butt looks in the jeans you bought yesterday or the way your skin glows when it does or if you don’t find anything to be thankful about, be thankful for your flaws, be thankful for that zit on your face because it is not a skin disease, be thankful that you weigh more than average because that means you have fat in all the right places. Just find things you could be thankful for, new things everyday! You can do it, I believe in you.
3. Social media influencers :
This is a tip that worked wonders for me, when I was struggling a lot with my body image and the way I looked, I started analysing what made me feel this way. I noticed I’d be feeling okay most of the day till the time I would open my Instagram and scroll down the feed, because as I would scroll down all these images of Victoria secret models that I followed would come on my feed, making me feel .. well, less beautiful and I would fall into a pit of self-loathing misery until I decided to follow some of the most influential body positive models and having their body positive pictures and amazing captions on my feed really uplifted my mood, even got me going to the gym three times a week (took some time but yes it did happen)
So I would suggest you to look up some of these influential people who are very vocal about body issues and teach you how to value yourself. My favourite are : Demi Lovato and Ashley Graham but of course you can check others out and see who you vibe with the most!
4. Drink that water:
Yes I know, you’re probably rolling your eyes at me right now saying seriously! But trust me; I am as serious as this entire issue is. Hydrating yourself gives you this feeling of accomplishment like nothing else I swear. When I started drinking 12 glasses of water every day. I felt like I am the healthiest girl on the planet. I am not even kidding! I noticed that drinking sufficient amount of water just uplifts your spirit to another level and it really puts you in a good mood, also like … better skin, elevated energy level and what not so like, DRINK THAT WATER GIRLIES!
5. BE YOU! DO YOU!
Yes, you read that right. Be yourself, you don’t have to give in to the stupid and senseless trends of social media. You definitely don’t have to go out of your comfort zone to feel beautiful. You can wear anything you want. You can rock any look you like. You don’t have to feel limited or restricted because someone popular doesn’t vibe to your style.
Body positivity is all about appreciating your uniqueness, so yes! Try out different things. Experiment within or outside your comfort zone and remember do NOT compare yourself with anyone because anyone can be someone but no one can be YOU but you.
I don’t know if that made sense but girl, be you and ultimately you will yourself see how far you’ve come in this self-love journey!
Those were my 5 of my tips for all my babes out there. If you’re a guy you can apply this to your life too lol don’t come for me with accusations of sexism. I love my men and my women readers equally.
Lots of love.
